Thank you to all of the parents that have met with me to exchange information about our students on Nov. 2nd and Nov. 4th. I'm looking forward to meeting with many more parents on Nov. 10th. :)
We are continuing to read a plethora of texts to support growth in our reading fluency and comprehension. We have enjoyed our study of different genres and specific texts which we use in our small groups. The kids really enjoyed reading King Midas as an example of a myth (folktale) and connecting it back to Chocolate Touch, a super favorite of 3B. Many of us are enjoying Jenius, a story about a guinea pig and others are still enjoying Judy Blume writing. Some of the skills that we will be focusing on are: cause and effect, making inferences, synonyms/antonyms, comparing 2 different cultural interpretations of the same story, determining the author's purpose, and paraphrasing/summarizing.
3B students are becoming quite the authors! We are writing for a variety of purposes. Our present focus during Writing Workshop is narrative writing, specifically memoirs. We are taking a closer look at paragraphs, transitions, rewriting/editing, lead sentences/bold beginnings, run-on sentences, regular and irregular verbs, and more. Keep the pencils sharpened and encouragement flowing!
In Social Studies we are cartographers and we are in the middle of creating our own maps. Thank you to all who worked on your Family Fire Escape Plan which ties in with our map unit. The Fire Department is proud of so many students following through in working on these! Continue to study the Map Vocabulary and we will take a quiz next week.
Multiplication Rock keeps ringing through my mind because we are working on multiplication. Any extra practice you can exercise would be beneficial. In addition, continue to practice the concepts of measuring items using a ruler...specifically measurements to the nearest 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, 1 cm, and 1/2 cm. Also reviewing the diffference between perimeter and area are important.
We continue to share with each other each week...Virgil was our Classmate of the Week last week and next week we will have Nathan share with us. :)
We are looking ahead to the end of the month and how thankful we are... Thank you to all of our 3B volunteers that have been helping us! Thank you for supporting your child and working with them at home too! I hope that all of our 3B families have a great month and enjoy extra family time together!
Enjoy the season-

3B's October Beginning
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It was very cold in 3B today. It was like we were studying on the tundra with permafrost beneath our feet! We have been studying different habitats and logging information about their physical characteristics, animals and plants, and adaptations that the animals and plants have. We created a polar habitat on the side of our classroom and took turns bundling up and chilling out in the artic-like habitat. The students did a terrific job sharing facts and information with each other. Be sure to ask our kids about this activity!
Our polar exploration followed our study of the pond habitat. We focused on this habitat for a couple of days earlier this week and "rapped" it up with The Pond Rap....3B style. True talent came out and we enjoyed working together!
We took our Wednesday spelling test this morning and are all set for list #7. Please let me know if you have any questions about ways to study for spelling tests.
Many of us are reading How To Be Cool In Third Grade and discussing comprehension questions. Some of the students are reading Fudge-A-Mania with a small group and enjoying the humor and discussions with it.
We switched our writing schedule and we are beginning the day with our Writer's Workshop. Every student should be able to discuss what they are writing about. Our focus has been developing a clear beginning, middle and end. We are planning out our thoughts on a "road map" before we start writing our piece.
3-G math students will have a Math test on Thursday, October 7th and 3-B math students will have a Math test on Friday, October 8th. :)
Brandon was our Classmate of the Week last week and Lindsay has been our featured friend this week. We will pick a stick to find out who will have the next turn. :)
A special thanks from 3B for the fabulous class party on September 24th! It was a real fun party and enjoyed by ALL! We are looking forward to Mrs. Hus sharing an Art Awareness lesson with us this Thursday! We appreciate all of the parent support and encouragement thus far. We have enjoyed our Mystery Readers and the many extra helping hands that have helped us.
Happy Fall!

Quotes about OUR week...
In 3G Math we have finished Unit 1 and took a test today. In 3B Math we are almost finished with Unit One. We are planning to review on Monday and take the Unit 1 test on Tuesday. J
We wrapped up the Social Studies unit about Communities. We can tell you about the three different types: urban, suburban and rural. Next week we will begin studying Habitats and food chains.
Chocolate Touch was a literature focus in class. We had a large box of chocolates and got to open it this week. After we opened the box, we discussed it with our groups, and today we wrote our own paragraphs of how we opened the box. We each got to explore our own piece of chocolate. Delicious!!!
We tied together President Obama’s speech and our class book, Class President.
Holly was our “classmate of the week” this week and Noah will be our “classmate of the week” next week.
Have a healthy weekend!

We are on a roll and very busy in 3B
We are on a roll and very busy in 3B. We read Class President as a class and wrote our class laws together. We have been reading and studying Chocolate Touch. We’ve learned lots of new vocabulary and tied in a few chocolate activities. We will continue this novel study next week.
Our spelling routine is going strong. We have lots of good spellers in 3B! Many of the students enjoy using the website www.spellingcity.com to prepare for our spelling tests.
We have been writing about our summer vacations. This morning we completed these pieces and will continue to share our writing with each other during Writing Workshop.
In Social Studies, we have been working individually on a tri-fold pamphlet project. The pamphlets advertise features of the three different types of communities that we have been learning about.
Our math classes are moving ahead. 3G students are learning about polygons. 3B students are reviewing time, name collection, graphing, number grids and more. We have set up our rocket math and are ready to take off on Monday!
There are several responsible students and families using the Assignment Notebooks every night. Please be sure to check them on a daily basis.
Have a safe and healthy weekend!
